What is the difference between the types of batteries? Both gel and AGM batteries are a type of sealed lead acid battery. This means that, unlike traditional batteries, the possibility of electrolyte leakage and gas evaporation has been eliminated. In the case of gel batteries, this is achieved by concentrating the acid with silica, while AGM (absorptive glass mat) batteries have an electrolyte in a glass mat separator.
Gel batteries usually produced in the VRLA (alve regulated lead acid) technology have micro valves that allow the excess of released gases to evaporate.
AGM batteries are fully sealed because the glass mat absorbs the increased gas pressure. This allows for longer operation, reduces self-discharge and increases the storage capacity of the battery.
The main advantages of gel and AGM batteries over lead-acid batteries are:
- impersonality
- low self-discharge
- the ability to work at different angles of inclination, so in mobile applications
